Celebrating Community & Culture – CHIPAWO 2024-12-13

Celebrating Community & Culture – CHIPAWO By Allan Mbotshwa This Friday at 6 PM, Theatre in the Park in Harare will come alive with the vibrant sounds and sights of CHIPAWO's annual Christmas Stage Show, titled "An African Christmas." This much-anticipated event, which brings together children from Harare, Mazowe, Karoi, and beyond, is not just a festive celebration but a vital cultural initiative aimed at empowering Zimbabwe's youth, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds. CHIPAWO, short for Children’s Performing Arts Workshop, has been a beacon of hope and creativity for 35 years. Its mission is to cultivate local talent and ensure that Zimbabwean children can celebrate significant events like Christmas in ways that resonate with their cultural identity. By focusing on the theme "What We Want," this year’s show encourages children to express their aspirations and dreams through performance, fostering a sense of belonging and self-worth. The Christmas Stage Show is particularly inclusive, welcoming children from various schools and even other countries, alongside disadvantaged youth from rural and urban areas throughout Zimbabwe. This inclusivity not only enriches the performances—often featuring over 200 children on stage—but also helps bridge social divides, offering a platform for all voices to be heard. Moreover, the show will be filmed and broadcast on ZTV on Christmas Day 2025, ensuring that the hard work and creativity of these young performers reach a wider audience. Last year’s show will air this Christmas, providing continuity and a sense of tradition for families across the nation. Through its Arts Education for Development and Employment programme, CHIPAWO empowers children with skills that extend beyond the stage. By nurturing talent and promoting local culture, CHIPAWO plays a crucial role in shaping a brighter future for Zimbabwe's youth, reminding them that they too can shine brightly in their own stories.
